Banaras is considered the city of religion. It has great importance in Hinduism. The old name of Banaras is Kashi. There is a temple of Lord Bholenath, which is known as Kashi Vishwanath. This Shivling is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Every year millions of people from all over the world come to see the Shivling installed on the banks of the Ganges. The temple was built in a new form by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar in 1780. Later Maharaja Ranjit Singh donated 1000 kg of gold to the temple. The Shivling of Kashi is also known as Lord Vishweshwar, which literally means God of the universe.
