New Delhi: The All India Football Federation accepted Manolo Marquez’s resignation at its executive committee meeting on Wednesday. It didn’t have much choice as he had already informed of his intention not to continue even before India’s Asian Cup qualifier on June 10.

On June 9 News9 Sports reported that the Spaniard had made up his mind not to continue in April and duly informed the federation on the sidelines of the Super Cup in Bhubaneswar.

He was requested to extend his stay the away game in Hong Kong, in which they lost 1-0, on the understanding of a mutual termination process following the match.

AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey had insisted that the executive committee would take a call on Marquez’s future even though national team director Subrata Paul had informed all department heads that a new coach needed to be appointed.

“As previously agreed upon, we have parted ways with Manolo. It was just a formality. Now within the next 2-3 days advertisement will be floated to initiate the process for a new coach,” a person who attended the Ex Co meeting said.

Marquez took over from Igor Stimac in July last year in a three-year contract but under him India weren’t able to wn any competitive match and won only a friendly in eight outings (three losses and four draws).

India are rooted at the bottom of their Asian Cup qualifying group after a home draw with Bangladesh and an away defeat in Hong Kong and face Singapore on October 9.

In order to save money, the AIFF had accepted a dual coaching arrangement with Indian Super League side FC Goa for Marquez, paying $10,000 per international window when he took charge of the national team.

All-Indian team in ISL suggestion

India have slid to the 133rd spot in the FIFA rankings following the Hong Kong loss, forcing the AIFF to call in its advisers – Bimal Ghosh, Armando Colaco and Harjinder SIngh to a discussion and review of the national team’s performance.

While offering their suggestions, Ghosh floated the idea of fielding an all-Indian team in the top-tier ISL, to increase game time for home-based players.

“I have suggested this. It will be taken up by the technical committee now and later might be discussed with the ISL organisers,” Ghosh said.

The AIFF had earlier explored the idea of fielding a U-23 team in the second division I-League but dropped the plan after failing to convince clubs to release players.
