New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz lifted his maiden Cincinnati Open title after Jannik Sinner retired from the highly anticipated men’s singles final on Tuesday. Struggling with illness, Sinner retired from the summit clash after losing the first five games of the match against Alcaraz and apologised to the fans. The arch-rivals were expected to produce another gripping contest in what was their 4th consecutive meeting in a big final, however, Sinner couldn’t last the entire match.

Sinner looked under the weather right from the start of the final as he clearly struggled due to an illness, which he later revealed he caught on Sunday. Playing under hot and humid conditions, Sinner got off to a woeful start after opening the match with a poor service game, and his game worsened as the final progressed.

Sinner was trailing 0-5 in the first set against Alcaraz when he decided he couldn’t continue anymore as his condition appeared to have worsened.
