Leerdam, 27, secured victory in the women’s 1000 m on Monday at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium, crossing the finish line in a blistering 1 minute and 12.31 seconds.

The Dutch athlete was supported by her 29-year-old fiancé, who was seen crying as he celebrated with her family.

In an Instagram reel posted shortly after, Paul captured the emotional moment he watched her clinch the gold medal.

“MY BABY JUST SET THE OLYMPIC WORLD RECORD,” he wrote. “IM SO PROUD OF YOU.”

In the following post, Leerdam was seen celebrating by leaping into Paul’s arms while biting her gold medal, followed by a kiss between the couple.

“We just witnessed one of the most important sporting moments ever. The doc will tell. Words can’t describe how proud of you I am,” Paul wrote under the caption.

Leerdam, who blew a kiss to Paul from the ice, won silver in the same event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, finishing behind Japan’s Miho Takagi. Reflecting on that performance, she had noted she was “pretty happy” given it was her first Games, People reported.

This time, she outpaced her teammate Femke Kok, who took silver with a time of 1 minute and 12.59 seconds. Japan’s Takagi earned bronze, while American Brittany Bowe finished fourth. Erin Jackson, the 2022 500 m gold medalist, placed sixth.

Leerdam, a former hockey player who switched sports after realizing she was “never a team player,” told Infrostada Sports that “the individual aspect of skating appeals to me.”

Paul proposed to Leerdam on March 21, 2025, in a tropical setting surrounded by white flowers and candles.

“We can’t wait to spend forever together,” Paul shared on Instagram at the time, alongside photos of a diamond engagement ring.
