Chennai. India made an impressive comeback in the tournament by defeating Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the Super-8 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where India eliminated Zimbabwe from the competition with its big score. Whereas, South Africa confirmed its place in the semi-finals. Batting first, India scored a huge score of 257 runs, while Zimbabwe could only reach 184/6 in 20 overs.
Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh performed brilliantly and took 3 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs, which weakened Zimbabwe’s innings. He laid the foundation of India’s victory by dismissing Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl and Tony Munyonga.
Zimbabwean batsman Brian Bennett scored unbeaten 97 runs in 59 balls, which included 8 fours and 4 sixes. However, he remained just three runs away from his century. Varun Chakraborty also bowled effectively for India, while Axar Patel took the important wicket of Tadivanashe Marumani.
Sanju Samson was included in the playing eleven in this match, but he was out after scoring 24 runs. Samson along with Abhishek Sharma added 48 runs in 22 balls for the first wicket. Abhishek Sharma played an important inning of 55 runs, while Ishan Kishan led the innings by scoring 38 runs.
Team captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 33 runs in only 13 balls with the help of 3 fours and 2 sixes. But the most exciting moment came when Hardik Pandya scored 50 runs in 23 balls and Tilak Verma scored 44 runs in 16 balls, adding 84 runs in 31 balls. This brilliant batting helped India score the highest score of the 2026 T20 World Cup and the second highest score in T20 World Cup history.
With this win, India’s net run rate improved, which puts the team’s campaign in the right direction. Now on March 1, the match against West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata will be held as a ‘virtual knockout’. The winner of this match will take a strong step towards the semi-finals. However, despite the win, there is a clear need to improve the bowling combination, which the team management will keep in mind before the next important match against West Indies.
