The Indian government has launched the e-passport service to make international travel more secure, convenient, and high-tech. This service was launched under the Passport Seva Program (PSP 2.0). This new passport is a chip-based passport with even stronger security. The new chip-based e-passports being issued in India make the immigration process at airports safer and faster for travelers. They contain a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that stores biometric data such as photos and fingerprints, allowing for instant verification at e-gates without the need for paperwork.

How does an e-passport work?
An e-passport looks exactly like a standard passport, but it contains a small electronic chip and antenna. This chip stores your information, such as your photo, fingerprints, and personal information, digitally and securely (encrypted). This chip works on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, allowing your identity to be read instantly and securely.

Why is an e-passport important?
Airport checks will be faster.
Fake passports or passport copying will be virtually impossible.
International travel will be easier.
If your old passport is still valid, there's no need to replace it immediately; it will remain valid. New e-passports are being issued through the Common Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) upon renewal or new application. This technology will reduce manual checking at airports and maintain data integrity.

How to Apply for an e-passport
Registration - Go to the Passport Seva portal and click on 'New User Registration'.

Login and Form - Login with your registered ID, then click on the 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport' link.

Application Form - Fill out and submit the form online.
