Mobile network Vodafone is increasing its mobile contract prices by as much as 7.5% or a flat £2.50 per month from Wednesday, depending on when you took out your contract.

A rule change from mobile regulator Ofcom which took effect last January meant that mobile firms must set out, in pounds and pence figures, how much a contract will increase.

But older customers on pay monthly contracts signed before then could still have their prices go up using inflation, leading to a complex set of five price rise tiers with different increases for customers who signed up at different times.

Customers who signed up with Vodafone for mobile contracts after November 12, 2025 will be made to pay an extra £2.50 per month from April, with a further £2.50 increase next April and every April.

Vodafone says: "As you pay for your monthly airtime in advance, the annual price increase effective from 1 April will be reflected on your March bill. You'll only be charged for the days in April to which the increase applies. For instance, if your billing date is the 18th, we'll adjust your bill to ensure that the increased amount is only charged from 1 April to 17 April.

"The full price increase will appear on future bills."

Customers who signed up to a contract before December 9, 2020 will be made to pay a 7.5% increase, based on the Retail Price Index inflation rate for March.

Ironically, despite Ofgem banning inflation linked price rises for new contracts, this 7.5% rise is actually lower than £2.50 for many customers. For example, those paying £10 a month will pay an extra 75p, those paying £20 a month will pay an extra £1.50, and those paying £30 a month will pay an extra £2.25. In fact, only those paying £34 a month or more will pay more under the old 7.5% system (an extra £2.55 a month) than those on the newest pounds and pence contracts.

For those who took out a contract between December 9, 2020 and August 11, 2021 and between August 11, 2021 and July 1, 2024, your price will increase by 7.3%, because this is based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, not RPI.

Those who took out a contract between July 2, 2024 and November 11, 2025 will pay an extra £1.80 a month from April.

Vodafone said about the price rises: "Each year, we make changes to the price of our plans so that we can continue to invest in our networks, products and services. We know nobody likes to see prices rise, but like all industries, we're facing increased network and service costs."
