India has taken a historic step towards securing maritime trade. Adani Ports (APSEZ) has commissioned the country’s first ‘Port of Refuge’ system. This system will act as a safe haven for ships stuck in distress in the middle of the sea. With this step, India has now joined the few countries in the world which have such a modern system to deal with emergency situations.

‘Port of Refuge’ means a safe place where a ship in trouble can take shelter. If there is a sudden storm at sea, the engine of the ship fails or there is a fire, the ship can come to rest here. Here he will not only get a place to stay, but will also be given repair facilities and help in rescuing the crew. Earlier, due to the absence of any such concrete system, there was a fear of major accidents.

Which ports were selected?

Two major parts of India have been selected for this special work. Maharashtra’s ‘Dighi Port’ is on the western coast. Who will take care of the ships of the Arabian Sea. On the east coast is Gopalpur Port of Odisha, which will support ships during storms in the Bay of Bengal. Together, these two ports will make India’s sea routes safe from all sides.

How will there be profit in business?

Most of India’s essential goods like oil and gas come via sea. When foreign companies come to know that India has safe ports to help them in times of crisis, their confidence will increase. This will increase the movement of ships on Indian routes and will also increase the country’s earnings. It is like the presence of safe parking and repair shops on the highways, which leads to more vehicles moving there.

Will provide protection from pollution

If a big ship filled with oil sinks in the sea, its oil spreads in the water and destroys the fishes and the environment. With the help of this new system, the damaged ship can be brought to the port before it sinks. This will prevent the sea water from getting dirty and the sea creatures will also remain safe. This shows how serious India is now about the environment.
