Udupi: Many auto-rickshaw drivers in the district have shifted from auto-gas to petrol as the supply of auto-gas has been disrupted due to the West Asia conflict.

While CNG supply remains stable, auto-gas availability has become irregular. Drivers say they use auto-gas only when it is available and rely on petrol the rest of the time to continue operating their vehicles.

Udupi taluk has around 700 LPG-run autos and about 900 CNG-run autos. Most vehicles have a petrol mode, so drivers are managing for now. However, a small number of autos that removed the petrol mode and depend fully on LPG are facing difficulties.

Some auto drivers are travelling to Brahmavar, Hejamadi and nearby areas to refill LPG. “If this situation continues, earning a livelihood will become difficult,” said Udupi auto driver Rakesh.

Auto-gas is being sold immediately after each consignment arrives, but drivers allege that some outlets are charging ₹10–₹20 more per kg than the usual price. “This is causing hardship to drivers,” said Sivananda Moodubettu of the Auto Rickshaw Association.

Auto-gas suppliers said the main issue is inadequate supply, not distribution. They confirmed that the matter has been brought to the attention of the district administration and local representatives, and discussions with supply companies are ongoing.
