WhatsApp Testing New ‘Mention to Add’ Feature for Group Chats

WhatsApp is reportedly working on another smart feature designed to simplify group management. According to recent leaks, the platform may soon allow users to add new members to a group simply by using the “@” mention in the chat box—eliminating the need to navigate through multiple settings.

This upcoming feature is expected to make group interactions faster and more intuitive, especially for users who frequently manage large or active groups.

What is the ‘Mention Picker’ Feature?

As per details shared by WABetaInfo, the new functionality—internally referred to as “Mention Picker”—has been spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.14.7.

With this feature, users will be able to type “@” in the message field and select a contact directly. Alongside the contact name, an “Add” option will appear. By tapping this option, users can instantly add that person to the group without leaving the chat screen.

This is a major upgrade from the current process, where adding a participant requires going into group info settings and manually selecting contacts.

How the Feature Will Work

The process is expected to be simple and user-friendly:

  • Open a WhatsApp group chat

  • Type “@” in the message bar

  • Start typing the contact’s name

  • Select the contact from the suggestion list

  • Tap the Add button next to the name

Once done, the selected person will be added to the group directly.

This seamless integration of mentions and group management could save time and improve overall usability.

Currently in Testing Phase

At the moment, the feature is still under development and being tested among a limited number of beta users. There is no official confirmation yet on when it will be released to the public.

However, based on WhatsApp’s rollout pattern, features that perform well in beta testing are typically introduced to all users in future updates.

Part of WhatsApp’s Bigger Upgrade Strategy

This new feature aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user convenience and expand functionality. The platform has been consistently rolling out updates to improve communication and privacy.

Recently, WhatsApp also introduced a username-based system that allows users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. This feature is currently available to select users and is expected to roll out more widely soon.

Why This Feature Matters

The ability to add members directly from the chat window could significantly improve group management. It reduces the number of steps involved and makes the process more natural—especially during ongoing conversations where adding someone instantly becomes necessary.

For businesses, communities, and friend groups, this feature could make coordination much smoother and faster.

What to Expect Next

While the ‘@ to add member’ feature is still in its early stages, it has already generated excitement among users. If successfully implemented, it could become one of the most practical additions to WhatsApp’s group functionality.

Users are advised to keep their app updated to access new features as soon as they are officially released.
