London. A fierce debate has erupted between Lalit Modi and Kevin Pietersen regarding England’s famous tournament ‘The Hundred’. The first chairman of IPL, Lalit Modi, claimed that this 100-ball tournament will end in the next three years. Peterson, however, disagreed with this and made a different prediction.

In fact, during an interview, Lalit Modi had given a statement that the Hundred League would end within three years. After this, while tweeting on this, Pietersen wrote – The Hundred will not end, but in three years it will become a T20 competition. Then replying to a social media user, he wrote, ‘This will just become UK’s IPL. Its format will change to T20. Lalit Modi has made a long post on this.

While expressing his views on social media, Lalit Modi said that no T20 league can be like IPL. He also enumerated many logistical problems regarding ‘The Hundred’. He said, ‘No T20 tournament in this life can be like IPL. It is not right to hype it up so much because you neither have a strong fan base, nor that much population, nor that much support from advertisers. Indian players will also not be able to play in it. It is difficult for 18 counties to come together. If you want to make it a home and away format like IPL, then you will not get that many more viewers. Therefore the truth must be understood. At the most, it can become a T20 league like South Africa.

He further raised questions on the economic aspect also. Lalit Modi said, ‘Find out how many subscribers Sky Cricket has and imagine how much people will pay for it. You will be lucky if this number reaches one million.

The Hundred, which started in 2021, has been in the news due to its unique format of 100 balls. This tournament is played in both men’s and women’s categories. Recently, in its first auction, big bids were made on many uncapped players. James Coles became the most expensive player, bought by London Spirit for around 3.9 lakh pounds. Jordan Cox was added by Welsh Fire for three lakh pounds.

IPL started in 2008 and today has become the biggest cricket league in the world. 10 teams participate in it and each franchise has a budget of crores of rupees. For this reason, ‘The Hundred’ is often compared to IPL, but Lalit Modi believes that achieving IPL level is not easy. The coming season will also see four IPL-backed teams in ‘The Hundred’, which is expected to increase the popularity of this league. However, it will be interesting to see whether this change will take it to new heights or not.
