Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday outlined a series of measures focused on water management, agriculture, and employment during a press conference in Chandigarh. The announcements included a major push to expand canal-based irrigation and reduce dependence on groundwater resources. According to the Chief Minister, the state has made an investment of ₹6,700 crore to strengthen irrigation infrastructure. This includes the installation of approximately 14,000 kilometres of new pipelines and the construction of around 4,000 kilometres of canals during the current season. Officials indicated that water flow in canals is expected to begin at full capacity from May 1.
The government stated that areas located at the tail end of canal networks, such as Fazilka and Abohar, are also expected to receive water supply by May 2. The initiative is aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of irrigation resources across regions that have historically faced shortages. Efforts to improve groundwater levels were also highlighted. According to the announcement, water recharge measures have led to an increase of 2 to 4 metres in groundwater levels in certain areas. Authorities said reducing groundwater extraction remains a priority as part of long-term sustainability planning.
In the agricultural sector, the government has introduced a zonal approach to paddy sowing. The state has been divided into four zones to stagger the sowing process, with direct seeding scheduled to begin from May 15. Canal-based water supply is expected to be rolled out in phases starting June 1. Officials indicated that this approach is intended to manage electricity demand and ease labour requirements during peak agricultural periods.
The Chief Minister also addressed concerns regarding Punjabis deported from Australia, stating that the state government would extend assistance to those affected. While specific measures were not detailed, the assurance was made as part of broader remarks on employment and youth welfare. The announcements reflect ongoing efforts by the state government to address water scarcity, support agricultural productivity, and create employment opportunities, while focusing on long-term resource management.
