The Ganga Expressway was inaugurated on Wednesday, marking a significant development in Uttar Pradesh's infrastructure. However, this new expressway will make the journey from Meerut to Prayagraj more expensive. Spanning 594 kilometers, drivers will need to pay a toll of ₹1800 for a one-way trip, which could strain the finances of vehicle owners. The Uttar Pradesh government has released the toll rates, which vary based on vehicle type.
For the entire 594 km journey, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and registered tractor drivers will incur a toll of ₹905. Cars, SUVs, vans, and light vehicles will be charged ₹1800, while light commercial vehicles and light goods vehicles will pay ₹2840. Buses and trucks will face a toll of ₹5720, and heavy construction machinery, earth-moving vehicles, and multi-axle vehicles will be charged ₹8760. For vehicles with seven or more axles, the toll is set at ₹11265.
The toll fees will be automatically deducted via FASTag. A total of 14 toll plazas have been established along the expressway, with the main plazas located in Meerut and Prayagraj, while the remaining are situated at entry and exit points.
With the Ganga Expressway operational, travel time from Meerut to Prayagraj will significantly decrease. Previously, this journey could take over 10-12 hours on regular roads, but now it can be completed in just 6 to 7 hours at a speed of 120 km/h. This expressway, the longest greenfield expressway in the country, runs parallel to the Ganga River and plays a crucial role in connecting western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, the high toll rates may pose a burden for the general public and small traders, especially those who frequently travel this route, leading to increased monthly expenses.
Initially, the estimated toll was ₹1500, but the final rate has been set at ₹1800. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the expressway on April 29 in Hardoi. This project is seen as a significant step towards making Uttar Pradesh an 'Expressway State.' The government claims that improved connectivity will boost trade, tourism, and industrial growth, but regular drivers will now have to account for additional travel costs.
Before embarking on a journey, it is advisable to check the FASTag balance and confirm the toll rates, as there may be discounts available in the initial days. While driving on the Ganga Expressway promises comfort, it will undoubtedly impact the wallet.
In related news, toll rates on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway also saw an increase in April 2026. The toll for cars and SUVs is now approximately ₹675, while light commercial vehicles are charged ₹1,035, and buses/trucks face a toll of ₹2,150. This 302 km long six-lane expressway has a speed limit of 100 km/h.
