In view of the escalating heat across India, several states have announced their summer vacation schedules for 2026. Find out the specific dates for school holidays in various states—including Delhi, UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan—right here.

Currently, the heat in India is at its peak, and the impact of heatwaves is clearly visible across many states. Consequently, with the health of children in mind, state governments and education departments have begun announcing school holidays. In some states, vacations have already commenced, while in many other regions, schools are set to close in the coming days.

School Schedules Altered Due to the Heat

This year, due to the severe heat, announcements regarding changes to school timings and the declaration of holidays are being made rapidly. Given the rising temperatures and prevailing heatwaves, governments are prioritizing the safety of children. In many areas, schools have either been completely shut down or their operating hours have been shifted to the morning to protect children from heatstroke and the harsh sun.

Extended Holidays Announced in Delhi

In the national capital, Delhi, the Directorate of Education has clarified that the summer vacations for schools will commence on May 11 and continue until June 30. Following this extended break of approximately 50 days, schools are scheduled to reopen on July 1. This decision was taken in light of the continuously rising temperatures to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.

Schedule for Uttar Pradesh and Neighboring States

In Uttar Pradesh, according to the Basic Education Council, government schools will observe holidays from May 20 to June 15, while private schools may adopt a different schedule based on their own discretion.

In Bihar, schools will remain closed from June 1 to June 20. Haryana will observe its summer vacation from June 1 to June 30. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, holidays have been declared from May 17 to June 20; in Punjab, schools are set to remain closed throughout the months of May and June, although there may be slight variations in the specific dates.

Holidays Begin Early in West Bengal and Odisha

In view of the prevailing heat, holidays have already commenced in several districts of West Bengal. However, a different schedule is in effect in hilly regions such as Darjeeling and Kalimpong, where the weather remains relatively cool. Meanwhile, the Odisha government has also decided to close schools starting April 27—earlier than the usual schedule. This measure has been taken to protect children from the intense heat.

Strict Measures and Holidays in Southern States

In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, school holidays have been declared from April 24 to June 11. Notably, the Andhra Pradesh government has issued a warning to private schools, strictly prohibiting them from conducting any classes during the holiday period; failure to comply could result in strict punitive action. Meanwhile, schools in Chhattisgarh will remain closed from April 20 to June 15, although the attendance of teachers may be mandatory during this period.

In certain states and cities, instead of declaring a complete holiday, school timings have been adjusted. In Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and several parts of the NCR—such as Noida and Ghaziabad—schools are currently operating from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The objective behind this change is to shield children from the scorching heat of the afternoon.
