Mangaluru: Prisons are often associated with punishment and a lonely life within four walls. However, the lives of female undertrial prisoners in Mangaluru District Prison are heading in a new direction. Handicrafts blossoming from the skilled hands of these inmates are bringing a new light of self-confidence into their lives.

Currently, there are 15 female inmates in the prison, including foreign nationals. As part of a reformative process, they have undergone a two-month training program led by the NGO Prison Ministry India. This effort aims to give a new meaning to their lives through skill development, rather than spending their sentence merely wasting time or brooding over the past.

What is being prepared?

The female inmates are creating various useful items, including paper bags, wire bags, woolen bags, woolen caps, tablecloths, and rubber bands. Sewing is also being taught. The raw materials required for these items are supplied by the NGOs providing the training. The Jail Superintendent states that the training is provided not primarily for sales, but to provide a livelihood path for the inmates' future lives.

Talent amidst the walls of confinement

The goal behind this is to foster mental peace, discipline, teamwork, and a sense of self-reliance among the inmates. For some, this is their first time participating in such activities. These initiatives play a vital role in integrating those distanced from society back into the mainstream. These handicrafts created by the female inmates of Mangaluru District Prison are a testament to the fact that talent can bloom even within prison walls and life can change if given an opportunity.

No plans for sale currently

The items created by the inmates are used as souvenirs to honor senior officials or guests when they visit the jail. Prison authorities have stated that there is currently no plan to sell these products.

A path to transformation

"All 15 female undertrial prisoners in the jail are involved in making handicrafts. This will lead to a new transformation in them and serve as a path for their future lives. Along with this, yoga training has also been provided. There are plans to provide various livelihood training sessions for male inmates as well in the coming days." — Sharanabasappa, Jail Superintendent.
