A five-year-old boy has been left with a hole in his skull after an e-scooter crashed into his bike. Henry Jackson was playing with pals outside his home in Northampton when he collided with the electric scooter, causing him to fall off, according to the police.
The family said he was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery to remove bone fragments and debris from his head. Henry has been left with a 3-4cm hole in his skull. After six days in hospital, the toddler returned home. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Northamptonshire Police confirmed a man aged 33 was arrested on May 10, in connection with a serious collision between the rider of an e-scooter and a child on a bicycle on May 5. The man has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
Henry's brother, Jamie Argent, 19, said: "Henry is proper bright, bubbly and just gets along with everyone, no matter who they are.
"He was just playing outside on his bike, and the next minute his clothes were all covered in blood, it was so scary."
Roofer Jamie added: "When I went to visit him in hospital he was all wrapped up in bandages, he looked so drained and had no energy. It was a very traumatic scene."
He said the family was over the moon to have him home again after six days and to see him back to his lively self again, adding: "I think there should be much stricter rules for e-scooters."
In the UK you can only ride a privately owned e-scooter on private land with the landowner's permission.
You can ride a rented e-scooter on public roads, including cycle lanes, but it is illegal to use one on a pavement or motorway. You must have a full or provisional driving licence.
Doctors were unable to cover the hole in Henry's skull with a metal plate due to Henry's age and size. It means he will have to be very careful with his head for the rest of his life, as he is missing part of his skull.
Henry's family are raising money to get Henry a brand-new bike, as they say his old bike was destroyed during the crash. The money would also help support him during his recovery.
Northamptonshire Police said a collision between the rider of an e-scooter and a child on a bicycle happened at about 6.15pm on May 5.
The force said in a statement posted on social media that officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or who may have dash-cam footage.
