Mumbai:Pahlaj Nihalani, a well-known Hindi cinema filmmaker and former chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), passed away at the age of 76. The news of his demise has created a wave of mourning in the film industry. His last rites will be performed today at 3 pm in Santa Cruz, Mumbai.
Pahlaj Nihalani had made his own identity as a producer in Bollywood. He produced many successful films and played an important role in giving a new direction to the careers of many artists. Especially the credit goes to him for giving big opportunities to stars like Govinda and Chunky Pandey in the initial phase.
According to media reports, Pahlaj Nihalani was facing health problems for some time. It is being told that he was suffering from liver disease.
After his health deteriorated, he was admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he breathed his last.
Pahlaj Nihalani was a famous name in the Hindi film industry. He produced many successful films as a producer and later also made his mark as the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification.
Films made under his banner include films like Aankhen, Andaz, Talaash, Rangeela Raja and Julie 2. His role in film production and the Censor Board made him one of the influential figures in the industry.
Pahlaj Nihalani entered the field of film production in the early 1980s. His first production film Hathkadi was released in the year 1982.
After this, Aandhi-Toofan was released in 1985, which further strengthened his identity as a producer.
The film Ilzaam (1986) is considered to be one of the biggest achievements of his career. Through this film, Govinda entered Bollywood as a lead actor.
The following year he produced Aag Hi Aag, which gave Chunky Pandey recognition in the Hindi film industry.
During his long career, Pahlaj Nihalani produced many popular commercial films like Gunahon Ka Faisla, Paap Ki Duniya, Mitti Aur Sona, Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen.
Among these, Aankhen was included among the most successful and high-grossing films of the 1990s. This film is still counted among the biggest successes of his career.
Apart from film production, he also entered the field of direction. In the year 2012, he directed the film Avatar starring Govinda.
Apart from this, he also played a small role in the film Halla Bol released in 2008.
In January 2015, Pahlaj Nihalani was appointed Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
His tenure in the Censor Board remained in the headlines due to continuous discussions and controversies. In August 2017, lyricist and advertising expert Prasoon Joshi replaced him as CBFC Chairman.
