Ayodhya: A major controversy has emerged at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya after allegations surfaced that several employees were involved in siphoning off cash from the temple’s donation boxes.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has launched an extensive probe into the matter, with preliminary findings pointing to the alleged involvement of five to six staff members.

Sources familiar with the investigation said temple authorities became suspicious after reviewing surveillance footage, which reportedly showed employees removing cash from donation boxes. While the temple trust has yet to file a formal police complaint, insiders suggest that an internal inquiry had already been initiated before the issue came into the public domain.

Large-Scale Theft Suspected

Investigators believe substantial amounts of money may have been taken from the temple’s donation boxes over a period of time. The Ram Temple currently has around 40 donation boxes installed across its premises, a significant increase from the approximately 10 boxes that were in place when the temple first opened.

Nearly 50 employees are involved in the donation-counting process, including staff assigned to supervise the counting operations on behalf of the temple trust.

According to sources, authorities have so far recovered close to Rs 2 crore in cash from five employees who are under scrutiny in connection with the case.

SIT Examining Financial Records

The SIT has begun examining the financial transactions, investments and major expenditures of individuals linked to the alleged theft. Investigators are also trying to establish the duration of the suspected embezzlement and determine whether the operation involved a wider network.

In response to the allegations, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team and directed it to submit its findings within 15 days.

The SIT has been conducting inquiries at the temple premises for the second consecutive day. More than 42 employees were questioned on Monday, while individuals associated with the temple trust are also being examined as part of the investigation.

Suspicion Surrounds Temple Worker

The investigation has also brought attention to Ram Shankar, alias Tinnu Yadav, whose role is reportedly being examined by investigators.

However, speaking to media, Yadav denied any involvement in the donation-counting process. He stated that his responsibilities were limited to maintenance- work, including cleanliness, water arrangements and installation of fans within the temple complex.

“The SIT is investigating the matter and the truth will come out. Whoever is found guilty should face action,” he said.

Responding to questions regarding his assets, Yadav said he had purchased land in 2008 and later built a hostel. He also claimed to have previously earned a livelihood by operating tempos and working as a driver for an organization.

Investigation Continues

With the SIT intensifying its probe, officials are focusing on uncovering the full extent of the alleged misappropriation and identifying all individuals who may have been involved. The case has raised serious questions about the security and monitoring of donation collections at one of India’s most prominent religious sites.
