The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to rein in Indian cricketers retiring early. In recent times, many players have retired from international and Indian cricket to play in foreign leagues, due to which this issue has come into discussion. The latest example is Vijay Shankar. He retired at the age of 35 and soon became available for the Lanka Premier League (LPL). He has been signed by Kandy Royals.

After Vijay Shankar, KS Bharat has also said goodbye to international cricket. It is not clear how long wicket-keeper batsman Bharat, who has played 7 test matches for Team India, will play in domestic cricket. After retirements coming one after the other, now BCCI has become alert and is preparing to bring a retirement policy.

What policy will BCCI bring?

The decision to crack down on players retiring early to play in foreign leagues was discussed in detail at the Apex Council meeting on Thursday evening (June 5). This meeting took place online and the final decision on this matter has been left to the BCCI President and Secretary. According to a Cricbuzz report, the board is considering imposing a cooling-off period of at least 5 years for a player to join Indian cricket after playing in a foreign league.

What will this change?

BCCI does not allow any active Indian player to participate in foreign leagues. If he wants to play, he has to first retire from international and Indian cricket. Apart from Vijay Shankar, big names like Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla and R Ashwin have adopted this path. BCCI is worried if this trend increases and is thinking of implementing a cooling-off period policy of 5 years. If this policy is implemented, BCCI can deprive players playing in foreign leagues from broadcasting and coaching for 5 years.
