The Fencing Association of India (FAI) has revealed the senior national team that will compete in the upcoming 26th Senior Asian Fencing Championships 2026, scheduled to take place in Delhi. This announcement follows a series of competitive national trials.
The championships will occur at Bharat Mandapam from June 19 to June 24, marking a pivotal moment for Indian sports. This event is expected to lay the groundwork for India's competitive journey leading up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Over 400 elite athletes from more than 30 countries will participate in this high-stakes competition.
The Indian team comprises 24 athletes, equally divided between 12 men and 12 women, with CA Bhavani Devi, the nation's first fencing Olympian, leading the squad.
Satej D. Patil, President of the FAI, expressed optimism about India's capability to host a premier fencing tournament in New Delhi. He believes the Indian team is well-prepared to achieve strong results and secure spots for the Asian Games. "We are excited and confident in our ability to host a world-class event here in New Delhi. I trust in our team's preparation and talent to excel on this significant platform and earn qualification for the Asian Games. It is an honor to welcome top fencers from around the world to India, and we anticipate an exceptional showcase of sportsmanship," he stated.
The stakes are high in New Delhi, as this championship serves as a direct qualifier for the Asian Games 2026. The FAI Selection Committee highlighted that competing against renowned athletes on home turf is crucial for the national program's growth. They emphasized that this tournament will set the strategic foundation for Indian fencing's preparation and competitive approach as they aim for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
