England have put out a 16-man squad for the upcoming three match ODI series vs India, and it kicks off on July 14. The main headline is the first ever England call-up for Sussex all-rounder James Coles, pretty big deal yeah.
The selectors have also brought back some more seasoned pace options, with Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood returning as England keep ticking over their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2026.
Harry Brook will captain the side through the ODI series.
James Coles gets his first England call-up
James Coles has been handed his first ODI spot after a run of strong domestic cricket form. This young all-rounder has done well with both bat and ball, so now he can really see how it holds up when facing a serious Indian outfit.
And honestly, his selection is one of the most notable moments in England’s squad announcement.
England shuffle the squad, four changes made
England have made four changes compared to the squad that went to Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Saqib Mahmood and James Coles are in, while Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Jamie Overton and Luke Wood have missed out on selection for the India series.
The rest of the group stays the same, since England had already won the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Archer and Atkinson give England extra edge with the ball
The return of Jofra Archer is a real boost for England’s pace unit. Archer has been working his way back after injury, and he’s expected to have a meaningful role when England take on India.
Gus Atkinson is back too, after being absent from the Sri Lanka series. Saqib Mahmood has also been recalled as England aim to set up a sharper bowling structure before the World Cup.
Josh Tongue is in the squad as well, and he might push for an ODI debut if the series opens the door for him.

Harry Brook continues as captain
Harry Brook stays as England’s white ball captain. He recently steered the team to a 2-1 ODI series win over Sri Lanka, after England dropped the first match and then recovered.
The team management clearly trusts Brook’s leadership, as England get ready for yet another big assignment against India.
Experienced names like Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran are still there to bring know how to the group.
India ready for a hard test
India head into this ODI series following a 3-0 sweep of Afghanistan at home. The run will also bring Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back into India’s ODI setup.
Both teams are expected to use the series to experiment with combinations, testing what fits best ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2026.
Before the ODI part begins, India and England are also set to play a five-match T20I series. The first game in Durham got washed out because of rain, and the second T20I is scheduled for Manchester on July 4.
England ODI squad for India series
Harry Brook (Captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, James Coles, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Josh Tongue.
India vs England ODI series schedule
July 14: First ODI - Edgbaston, Birmingham
July 16: Second ODI - Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
July 19: Third ODI - Lord’s, London
England have picked a pretty balanced squad, blending experienced players with younger options. James Coles is one of the names to watch as he looks set for his first real look at international cricket. With this three-match ODI series against India, it should be a key measuring stick for both sides ahead of the World Cup.
