In the holy month of Sawan, the festival of Hariyali Teej is being celebrated with full enthusiasm and traditional devotion across the country amid scattered greenery and drizzle all around. In the states of North and Central India, especially Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Bihar, special enthusiasm is being seen among women and newlyweds regarding this festival.

Sixteen adornments and swings

On the occasion of Hariyali Teej, married women observe Nirjala fast to pray for the long life and unbroken good fortune of their husbands. Long queues of women are being seen in temples since morning for darshan and worship. Green colored clothes, henna applied on hands and sixteen adornments are the main hallmarks of this festival. Swings have been installed on trees in the parks of villages and cities, where women are following the tradition of swinging while singing folk songs and Kajri of Sawan.

Sindhare’s tradition and sweetness of dishes

On this festival, the old tradition of sending ‘Sindhara’ from the maternal home to the daughter’s house is being followed, in which make-up material, clothes and special sweets are sent. On the occasion of Teej, there is huge demand for traditional dishes like Ghevar, Malpua and Kheer in homes and markets. The newlyweds have reached their parents’ home to celebrate their first Teej.

Symbol of reunion of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati

According to religious beliefs, this festival is celebrated to commemorate the reunion of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. According to mythology, Mother Sati took 107 births to reunite with Mahadev but she could not find Shiva. In her 108th birth, she was born in the form of a mountain in the house of mountain king Himavan and Mainavati. Mother Parvati performed hard penance for thousands of years due to which Lord Shiva was pleased and accepted her as his wife on the day of Sawan Shukla Tritiya. It is believed that by worshiping Shiva and Parvati with full rituals on this day, married women get unbroken good fortune and unmarried girls get the desired groom.

Symbol of nature and new life

On Hariyali Teej, there is a special tradition of not only wearing green clothes, but also wearing green bangles, green bindi, and applying mehndi. Mehndi has a cooling effect, which gives coolness to the body in the humidity of monsoon. That is why green color on the Teej of Sawan is not just a fashion or tradition, but a wonderful confluence of religion, nature and health.
