Newcastle United has confirmed the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from fellow Premier League side Manchester City on a long-term contract.

Gonzalez was unveiled in front of Newcastle United fans ahead of its EFL Cup second round win over West Bromwich Albion.

The 24-year-old moved to England from Porto last year, and made 59 appearance for Manchester City in which he scored four goals.

“I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club. ‌I’ve only heard top words about the club ‌and ⁠the city, so I’m really excited to ⁠live here and to be part of this project,” Gonzalez said in a club statement.

“I’ve experienced playing at St James’ Park ​twice with Manchester City ‌and it was really tough. The atmosphere was amazing and the fans are so passionate. I can’t wait to experience that as a home player.”

Gonzalez’s arrival adds heft to a Newcastle United midifield that has been hit by the departures of key figures Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes over the summer.

“I’m very happy to ‌see Nico become a Newcastle United player. He brings serious ​quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch,” Newcastle head coach Matthias ⁠Jaissle said.

He is the fourth high-profile midfielder to leave Manchester City over the summer after Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Tijjani Reijinders, while Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson have both arrived.
