New Delhi: In Hindu religion, Ganesh Chaturthi is a special festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This festival starts from Chaturthi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha and continues till Anant Chaturdashi. During this time, Ganpati is established in homes and pandals. It is believed that worshiping Lord Ganesha removes obstacles and brings happiness and prosperity. This year Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Monday, 14 September 2026. The tradition of offering Durva in puja is also considered special. It is believed that Lord Ganesha loves Durva and offering 108 Durva gives his blessings.
While offering Durva to Lord Ganesha, keep in mind its freshness and cleanliness. Take green and fresh Durva for puja. Dry, withered or dirty Durva should not be used. Wash it with clean water. 108 different Durvas can be offered. Or you can add 3 more Durvas with five knots of 21-21 Durvas. Instead of throwing Durva on the idol, offer it with respect.
Prepare all the necessary materials before worshiping Ganesh Chaturthi. Keep Panchamrit, Ganga water or clean water for Abhishek. Also keep sandalwood, roli, akshat, fresh flowers, incense and desi ghee lamp. Modak, laddu or jaggery can be offered as offering. Worship becomes easier when the materials are organized. In the end, perform Aarti, offer Bhog and take Prasad with the family and distribute it among others also.
Clean the place of worship by taking bath on the morning of Ganesh Chaturthi. Start Ganpati Puja by offering Arghya to Sun God. Place the idol in a clean vessel and bathe it with Panchamrit. Then anoint with pure water or Ganga water. Wipe the idol with a clean cloth and dress it. After this offer sandalwood, roli and akshat. Now offer the cleaned Durva to Lord Ganesha. It is considered appropriate to keep it near the head, trunk or feet. During this, chant Ganapati Mantra.
It is important to take care of cleanliness while offering Durva. Avoid keeping it on the ground, picking it up with dirty hands or offering it to God without washing it. Do not use withered or impure Durva. If you have a resolution to offer 108 Durvas, then count them beforehand and keep them aside. Avoid haste and keep your mind focused on worship.
According to religious beliefs, Bappa is pleased by worshiping with devotion and offering beloved Durva on Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganapati is considered the remover of obstacles and his worship is associated with the wish for relief from the obstacles of life. It is believed that due to his grace, the path to completion of pending work becomes easier and happiness and peace remain in the house.
