Indian Railways will intensify ticket checking across Central Railway from October 1 to October 31, with passengers traveling on concessions, specified quotas and railway passes required to carry the prescribed original identity and eligibility documents.
The special ticket-checking drive will focus on verifying the validity and authenticity of tickets ahead of the festive travel season, when passenger traffic is expected to rise.
Ticket-checking staff will pay particular attention to passengers traveling under concessions, specified reservation quotas and railway passes.
Original ID will be important
Passengers traveling on concession or under specified reservation quotas must carry the prescribed original identity proof to establish their eligibility.
If a ticket covers multiple passengers, at least one passenger listed on the ticket must carry the required original ID.
According to Central Railway, if the required original proof is not available, all passengers traveling on that ticket may be treated as traveling without a valid ticket under the applicable rules.
E-Pass and PTO passengers
Passengers traveling with an E-Pass or PTO will also need to carry the prescribed original identity proof.
They must also ensure that the E-Pass or PTO has been properly exchanged for the prescribed authority to travel before starting their journey.
Unreserved tickets also under scrutiny
The checking drive will also focus on the authenticity of unreserved tickets. Ticket-checking staff may use the TTE App where required to authenticate and verify tickets.
Central Railway said the exercise aims to curb misuse of reservation facilities, prevent fraudulent use of concessions and passes, verify ticket authenticity and reduce revenue leakage.
Which IDs are accepted?
The documents listed for train travel include:
- Voter photo identity card
- Passport
- PAN card
- Driving license
- Photo ID with a serial number issued by the Central or state government
- Student ID with photograph issued by a recognized school or college
- Nationalized bank passbook with photograph
- Bank-issued credit card with a laminated photograph
- Aadhaar card
Passengers should carry the required original document where the ticket category specifically requires proof of identity or eligibility.
Ticketless travel penalty has increased
The intensified checking drive comes after Indian Railways increased the minimum penalty for traveling without a valid ticket.
Under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026, the minimum penalty under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act, 1989, was increased from Rs 250 to Rs 500 with effect from June 20, 2026.
The Railways has advised passengers to travel with valid tickets and comply with the applicable rules to avoid penalties.

The October checking drive comes just before the peak festive travel period. With passenger numbers expected to rise, passengers using concessions, quotas or railway passes should check their ticket conditions and keep the required original documents ready before boarding.
