India vs West Indies 2nd ODI Highlights: The second ODI match between India and West Indies in Guwahati became not just a cricket match but a story of records, in which first the West Indies batsmen made the Indian bowlers helpless and then Shubman Gill wrote history with his batting.

Target of 406 runs, Rohit Sharma Gill’s century and Gill’s unbeaten storm of 223 runs… India won the match by 8 wickets in just 43.3 overs. With this victory, many big records were made and broken in ODI cricket.

When West Indies raised a mountain of 405 runs

  • After winning the toss at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, India chose to bowl first… but this decision of Indian captain Shubman Gill was made difficult by the West Indies batsmen. The Caribbean team scored 405 runs for 7 wickets in 50 overs. This was West Indies’ biggest score so far in ODI cricket.

  • Three batsmen scored centuries in West Indies’ innings. John Campbell scored 101 runs on 68 balls. Captain Shai Hope played an inning of 104 runs in 94 balls, while Aamir Jangu scored 114 runs in just 77 balls.

  • Campbell and Hope added 110 runs for the second wicket. After this, Hope and Jangu increased the problems for the Indian bowlers by making a partnership of 182 runs for the third wicket. Jangu’s innings included 13 fours and three sixes.

  • Among Indian bowlers, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each. But Gurnoor Brar gave away 96 runs in 10 overs and debutant Aaqib Nabi gave away 84 runs in 8.5 overs. West Indies made the match very challenging by setting a target of 406 runs for India.

The target was 406 runs, but there was confidence on Gill’s face.

When India came out to bat, it was faced with one of the most difficult targets in ODI cricket. Achieving the target of more than 400 runs was not easy, but the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma put pressure on the West Indies bowlers from the very beginning. Both added 255 runs for the first wicket. Rohit Sharma scored 101 runs on 75 balls. His innings included 10 fours and six sixes.

On the other hand, Gill batted cautiously in the beginning and then increased his pace and attacked the Caribbean bowlers. The partnership of 255 runs between the two in 158 balls changed the course of the match.

After Rohit’s dismissal, Virat Kohli also did not stay long and was out after scoring 29 runs in 19 balls, but it had no effect on Gill. Along with Ruturaj Gaikwad, he led India to victory.

Double century in 117 balls, Gill broke Ishan Kishan’s record

The most special thing about Shubman Gill’s innings was his double century. He completed 200 runs in 117 balls and made the record of scoring the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Earlier this record was in the name of Ishan Kishan, who had scored a double century in 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022. Gill achieved this feat 9 balls earlier.

Gill faced 133 balls in his entire innings and scored unbeaten 223 runs. This included 24 fours and seven sixes. His strike rate was 167.67. With this double century, Gill became the second batsman to score two double centuries in ODI cricket. Before him, this feat was done only by Rohit Sharma, who has three double centuries to his name.

Biggest innings in run chase, Maxwell’s record also behind

Gill not only scored the fastest double century, but also made the record of the highest individual innings while chasing the target in ODI cricket. Earlier this record was in the name of Glenn Maxwell of Australia. He scored unbeaten 201 runs against Afghanistan in 2023. Now Gill’s unbeaten inning of 223 runs has reached the top of this list.

Gill also became the second batsman in the world to score a double century while chasing the target. Before him, Maxwell had achieved this feat. Gill showed with this innings that even while chasing a big target, a balance can be maintained between aggressive batting and saving wickets.

Target of more than 400 runs achieved for the second time

Achieving a target of more than 400 runs in ODI cricket is a very rare achievement. India achieved this feat by scoring 406 runs against West Indies. Earlier, South Africa had achieved the target of 438 runs against Australia in 2006. In this way, this was the second time in ODI cricket that a team successfully chased the target of more than 400 runs. India achieved this target in just 43.3 overs and won by eight wickets with 39 balls remaining.

India becomes the fastest team to score 300 runs in ODI cricket

In this match, India completed 300 runs in just 29.1 overs. This became a new record for the fastest time for a team to reach 300 runs in ODI cricket. Earlier this record was in the name of South Africa, which had completed 300 runs in 32.2 overs against Australia in 2006.

India’s victory in the rain of records

This match in Guwahati will be remembered for the batting of both the teams. First, three West Indies batsmen scored centuries and India scored a huge score of 405 runs. After this, India’s two experienced batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli handled the innings, while captain Shubman Gill made the match memorable by scoring a historic double century. India achieved the target of 406 runs in only 43.3 overs. Gill remained unbeaten after scoring 223 runs and Ruturaj Gaikwad returned with him to the pavilion after scoring 31 runs.

This victory also became an opportunity for the Indian team to register its name in the record book of ODI cricket. On one hand the West Indies batsmen showed their strength, while on the other hand Gill proved that even the biggest target can be achieved with strong determination and excellent batting.
