Shubman Gill produced one of the greatest innings in ODI cricket history on Wednesday as India chased down a mammoth 406-run target against the West Indies in the second ODI at Guwahati.

Gill smashed an unbeaten 223 from just 133 balls, including 26 fours and eight sixes, while Rohit Sharma scored a fluent 101 from 75 deliveries. Their extraordinary batting display helped India reach 406/2 in only 43.3 overs, giving the hosts an eight-wicket victory with 39 balls remaining. The win also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gill Smashes Fastest ODI Double Century

Gill’s innings was the centerpiece of a remarkable run chase. The India captain reached his double century in only 117 balls, breaking the previous record held by Ishan Kishan, who had taken 126 deliveries to reach 200.

His final score of 223 not out became the highest individual score in an ODI chase and also the highest score by an Indian captain in the format.

Gill reached his century in just 62 balls before accelerating dramatically during the second half of his innings. Despite suffering from cramps and dealing with neck discomfort, he continued attacking the West Indies bowling.

The knock also gave Gill his 11th ODI century in 69 matches and his second double century in the format.

Rohit and Gill Destroy the Required Run Rate

Rohit Sharma provided the perfect support at the other end.

The former India captain smashed 101 from 75 balls, hitting 10 fours and six sixes. He and Gill put together a remarkable 255-run opening partnership, giving India complete control of the chase before Rohit was dismissed in the 27th over.

After Rohit’s departure, Virat Kohli scored 29 before being dismissed, but Gill remained completely in control. Ruturaj Gaikwad then joined him and helped finish the chase without further damage.

India eventually reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs.

West Indies Post 405 After Three Centuries

Earlier, West Indies had produced their own historic batting performance.

Sent in to bat, they scored 405/7 in 50 overs, their highest-ever ODI total. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries.

Campbell smashed 101 from 68 balls, including nine fours and five sixes. Captain Shai Hope followed with 104 from 94 balls, while Jangoo produced an aggressive 114 from 77 balls, featuring 13 fours and three sixes.

It was the first time West Indies had three centurions in the same ODI innings.

However, their total ultimately proved insufficient on a batting-friendly Guwahati surface.

India Complete Only the Second 400-Plus Chase

India’s successful pursuit of 406 was historic.

They became only the second team in men’s ODI history to successfully chase a target of 400 or more. South Africa remain the only team to have previously achieved the feat, chasing 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.

The victory also surpassed India’s previous highest successful ODI chase.

India’s bowlers had struggled earlier in the match, with Kuldeep Yadav taking 2/65 and Ravindra Jadeja also claiming two wickets. Kuldeep’s performance nevertheless carried a personal milestone as he entered the 200-wicket club in ODI cricket.

But with Gill and Rohit producing a 255-run opening stand, the enormous target suddenly looked manageable.

The result was an extraordinary ODI run-fest featuring 811 runs across the two innings, five centuries and a record-breaking chase. More importantly for India, the eight-wicket victory sealed the three-match series with one game still to play.
