Eating jaggery: Consumption of sugar is harmful for health. In such a situation, nowadays most of the people have started reducing the intake of sugar. Instead of this, people have started including jaggery, honey or dates in their diet. But are these alternatives really healthier than sugar and do they also affect blood sugar?
Whose glycemic index is what?
Jaggery: Lima Mahajan says that the glycemic index of jaggery is higher than that of sugar, so it is harmful for diabetic patients. Let us tell you, the glycemic index of jaggery is between 84 to 86, while that of sugar is around 65, which can increase the sugar spike rapidly.
Honey: If we talk about honey, its glycemic index is around 45 which is much lower than jaggery. This means that the sugar spike can be moderate and you can use up to five grams daily.
Dates Powder: If we talk about dates powder, its glycemic index is also between 40 to 50, which is considered almost equal to honey. However, it contains more fiber. Because of this, its glycemic load may be lower than honey. Despite this, it can increase your blood sugar but its effect may be less compared to honey and jaggery.
Stevia: Stevia is a natural sweet plant which is about 200 to 300 times sweeter than white sugar, but the good thing is that it has zero calories. Also, its glycemic index is zero, which means it does not spike sugar at all.
Fruit Sweetener: Fruit sweetener is also a natural sweetener which is 150 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. Its glycemic index is also zero. That means it does not spike sugar.
Which option is healthy?
Lima Mahajan says that consumption of stevia and fruit sweetener can be a great option for you during diabetes, PCOD and weight loss. However, keep in mind that before purchasing anything in which artificial sweetener has been used, read its label and also check the other ingredients present in it.
