Patna : Odisha ’s traditional martial dance form, Mayurbhanj Chhau , captivated audiences at Artshila Patna on Thursday as artistes from Bhubaneswar staged a vibrant performance showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The performance by Mayur Art Centre showcased the distinctive movements, powerful leaps and intricate choreography that define Mayurbhanj Chhau. Unlike the Seraikela and Purulia styles, which use masks, Mayurbhanj Chhau is performed without them, allowing dancers to express emotions through facial expressions and body movements.
Rooted in the martial traditions of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj region , the dance form evolved under the patronage of the erstwhile rulers of the princely state. Over time, it incorporated elements of local folk and tribal traditions, creating a unique blend of martial skills, traditional movements and artistic grace. Energetic jumps, swift footwork and spiralling turns remain its hallmark features.
Founded in Bhubaneswar in 1980, Mayur Art Centre is dedicated to preserving and promoting the dance form. Its repertory group of dancers and musicians, trained under eminent gurus, has performed at major festivals across India and represented the country at international cultural events.
Supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the group has toured Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Germany, besides performing in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Mozambique.
The programme offered Patna’s art lovers an opportunity to experience a dance tradition that seamlessly combines physical strength, discipline and artistic expression.
